Professional Accomplishments 

U.S. Citizen and native Spanish speaker living in the Baltimore-Washington area, USA.  Born in Chile, Latin America, of French parents, and educated in the British school system.  Fluent in English and Spanish and familiar with French.  

 

Experienced project manager, former business owner and executive, and currently, a professional English-Spanish freelance interpreter and translator.  Currently available for assignments as needed by client.

 

Strong technical background.  Former Certified Network Engineer, Information Technology programmer and project leader with hands-on experience in COBOL and other legacy languages, databases, and fourth generation languages.   Recently worked coding a Postgresql database supported by Navicat, Stackoverflow and Microsoft Office 365.

 

Founder, President/CEO of GlobalTech Bilingual Institute (GlobalTech) which operated from 1996 to 2012 when it was sold.  Globaltech provided adult education programs to Hispanic/Latino children and adults in the areas of English as a Second Language (ESOL) from Literacy to high school equivalency (GED) all of which were taught in bilingual mode.  GlobalTech also provided extensive computer training programs in basic office skills training to obtain Microsoft Office Certification for its students.  GlobalTech was certified as a Higher Education School by the Maryland Higher Education Commission.

Provided language instruction and translation services for various U.S. Government contractors for Federal Agencies such as Medicare, NSA, and the US Navy among others.

 

Conducted Workforce Development Programs under contract with the State of Maryland, the  City of Baltimore and various counties.  Some of the workforce programs were the Office Administration Program, the Bank Teller Program, and the Certified Nursing Assistance (CNA) program which included training and job placements at Johns Hopkins Hospital, local banks and other entities.  Over its 16 years of operation, Globaltech instructed over 5000 students.

 

Currently working as an on-demand professional freelance interpreter and translator in English and Spanish.  Works in the legal, medical, community, and educational settings.  Assignments are onsite, over-the-phone remote interpreting (OPI) and video-remote-interpreting (VRI).

WORK EXPERIENCE

 

2013 – PRESENT                    FREELANCER  -  SOLOPRENEUR

                                                

INTERPRETATION:   Ms. Guzmán is an on-call interpreter in the Maryland – Washington – Virginia – Delaware areas providing translation and interpretation services for the legal, medical, and community settings. 

 

LEGAL EXPERIENCE:  Deposition interpretation services for law firms and for court reporting firms in English and Spanish and vice versa.  Most depositions deal with Workmen’s Compensation cases and immigration cases at the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and other Executive Office of Immigration Review (EOIR) related to immigration status adjustments.

 

MEDICAL EXPERIENCE: Consecutive Interpretation sessions at the Curtis Hand Institute for Workmen’s Compensation patients with complex hand injuries including continuous follow-up sessions.  Consecutive Interpretation sessions at the University of Maryland Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery practice for patients with serious dental conditions.  Provided bilingual services provided at various medical, dental, and psychological counseling appointments for many of Spanish Speaking patients.

 

CONFERENCE EXPERIENCE:   Simultaneous Interpretation at conferences utilizing transmitters and receivers.  Of note is a three-day conference at Gallaudet University, a federally chartered private university for the education of the deaf and hard of hearing, at a Key Leadership Challenge Conference.   Additionally, a one-day conference at the American Bar Association in Washington DC on the Equatorial Guinea Trial Watch Conference.

 

TRANSLATION EXPERIENCE:    Provides translation services for companies in the banking, legal and healthcare industries as well as for the Customer Service Area of US Government Agencies. 

BANKING:  Provides translation from English into Spanish for the bank’s Customer Service Department and for their automated response system.

EDITOR:  Provides English and Spanish editing services to ensure that the wording on the source document is clear, accurate and precise in order to provide the same understanding in the target language. 

 

U.S. GOVERNMENT:   Worked for government contractors providing translation of content materials for the Customer Service Center of a federal healthcare agency related to the Affordable Care Act.  Scripts were written in English to outline and explain laws, rules, regulations, procedures and support resources.  The text was technical, complex and detailed.  The end-users of her Spanish language scripts were Spanish Speaking Customer Service Representatives (CSRs), hospitals, doctors, healthcare professionals and information technology departments that called in to get help from the CSRs about their various issues related to electronic healthcare records.  The job included a glossary of thousands of words and terms.  She developed the first English-Spanish glossary of terms for the agency.

 

U.S. GOVERNMENT:  Worked as a bilingual instructor providing remedial, intermediate and advanced Spanish language instruction for members of the U.S. Navy and the National Security agency that were preparing to take the Defense Language Proficiency Test (DLPT).

  

1996 – 2012                GLOBALTECH BILINGUAL INSTITUTE

 

FOUNDER AND SCHOOL DIRECTOR:  Established GlobalTech Bilingual Institute in 1996 and sold it in 2012.  She served as the School Director, Lead Instructor, and Curriculum Developer.  GlobalTech provided English as Second Language Programs from literacy to advanced, including the Pre-GED and GED program, for children and adults from Baltimore’s Hispanic-Latino population as well as Spanish as a Foreign Language to bank personnel and other professionals.  GlobalTech was approved by the Maryland Higher Education Commission as a Private Career School.

LEAD INSTRUCTOR:   Taught instructors a bilingual method tailored to students with low levels of Spanish language education correlated to the English as a Second Language curriculum.  The curriculum was bilingual from literacy to advanced to suit students at various levels of English language proficiency.  

  

CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT:  Led a team of instructors to develop a bilingual curriculum providing targeted skills instruction for various GlobalTech children and adult programs.

NOTE:  Over its 16 years of operations, GlobalTech Bilingual Institute provided bilingual instruction to over 5000 Latino/Hispanic and American students.
